Kirkwood resigned from BBC after her wedding and started working in recruitment.
She later got a job as a training consultant for a management consultancy based in Cheshire. For a brief period, Kirkwood co-worked with Sacha Baron Cohen at Wire TV. She returned to the BBC in 1993 to serve as a freelance presenter at the Elstree Studios training division. She hosted the TV show Talking Issues on HTV West while she was still employed at the Corporations Elstree Studios.
In 1996, Kirkwood joined the UK operation of The Weather Channel. It closed down and she had to go back to train with Met Office. She officially joined BBC in 1998. Kirkwood received an Honorary Fellowship from Princess Anne on November 17, 2015. She won the TRIC award for best TV Weather Presenter in 2003, 2008, 2009, and 2012.
